Scientists have studied the Moon for centuries, but it wasn't until 1969 that astronauts on the Apollo 11 mission brought back samples of another world. Up until that time we had learned a lot about the Moon and had a lot of theories (sometimes conflicting), but only actual samples could provide precise and accurate answers about compositions, ages, and processes.
